Guardiana del Mictlán

Artwork Description

“Guardian of Mictlán” is part of Catrinas por México, a series inspired by the journeys and experiences that have shaped my path as a makeup artist.

Each piece is born from a real Catrina and reimagined within a new visual narrative, merging the territories I have traveled, the places I have visited, and the productions we have created over the years. In this way, each work becomes a memory transformed into painting.

In this artwork, the central figure represents a point of transition between the visible and the spiritual. Her upward gaze suggests a connection to something beyond the earthly plane.

Beside her appears the Xoloitzcuintle, considered in Mesoamerican tradition as the guide that accompanies souls to Mictlán. More than a symbol, it represents protection, companionship, and the bond between the living and those who have departed.

In the background, pyramids and ancestral structures emerge, evoking the grandeur of the civilizations that inhabited these lands. Stone, stairways, and geometry remind us that identity is also built from territory. These architectures function as symbols of origin—places where history, spirituality, and memory meet.

The frame—intervened with authentic 22K gold leaf—acts as a portal. For me, it represents the threshold of memory: a space where lived experiences, traveled places, and created stories remain suspended in time.

The artwork does not only portray a figure.
It opens a doorway into memory.
